Simple Bible Study Method (5 Steps, ~30 Minutes)

This method is for any Christian who wants to hear God in His Word without needing special training. All you need is a Bible, a pen, and dependence on the Holy Spirit.

Step 1 – Read the Passage Twice

Slow down and read your chosen paragraph or passage two times.

  • First read: just listen and notice what stands out.

  • Second read: pay closer attention to repeated words, key phrases, and the basic flow of thought.

You are not trying to analyze yet—just to really see what’s there.

Step 2 – Summarize

Write one sentence (30 words or less) that summarizes what the passage is saying, without interpretation or application.

Ask:

  • Who or what is this mainly about?

  • What is being said or done?

No opinions, application, or “spin.” You’re simply restating the main point of the text in your own words.

Step 3 – See God, Christ, the Spirit, or the Gospel

Now ask: Where do I see God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, or the gospel in this passage?

You might notice:

  • God’s character (holy, patient, sovereign, gracious)

  • Something Jesus does, commands, or fulfills

  • The Spirit’s work in comforting, convicting, or empowering

  • How this text fits into the bigger story of the cross, resurrection, and new creation

Then write one positive, glorifying statement, for example:

  • “Jesus is the faithful shepherd who never abandons His sheep.”

  • “God is patient and keeps His promises, even when His people are weak.”

Step 4 – “And this means…”

Right after your glorifying statement, write a second sentence that begins with:

“And this means…”

Use that sentence to apply the truth to your own life, in a concrete way.

Example:

  • “Jesus is the faithful shepherd who never abandons His sheep.
And this means I can bring Him my fears today instead of trying to carry them alone.”

This keeps the order right:

  1. Who God is / what Christ has done.

  2. Then how you live (“And this means…”) in light of that.

Step 5 – Pray Using A.C.T.S.

Close by praying through what you’ve seen using the A.C.T.S. pattern:

  • A – Adoration: Praise God for who He is in this passage.

  • C – Confession: Admit where your life, thoughts, or desires have not matched what you’ve just read.

  • T – Thanksgiving: Thank Him for the blessing/care/help in the passage.

  • S – Supplication: Ask Him for help—specific help—to trust/obey/live out what you’ve found.

This simple loop (read, summarize, see Christ, apply, pray) can be done in 20–30 minutes and helps you keep the Bible God-centered, Christ-exalting, and personally meaningful.

If you imagine someone brand new to Bible study using this, what part do you think they might struggle with most—and how would you coach them through that step?
