While You Wait (5-Day Devotional)

Together We Press On — James 5:7–9

DAY 1 — The Farmer
James 5:7 starts with a farmer waiting for "the precious fruit of the earth," patient for rain he can't summon early. His waiting isn't sitting around — it's trust aimed at a harvest he didn't make happen and can't rush. If you're waiting on God today, you're not stuck. You're positioned, like a planted field, for something already on its way.

DAY 2 — The One Who's Coming
Picture someone standing at an airport gate, waiting on a flight that keeps getting delayed. She doesn't leave, because she's not waiting on a maybe — she's waiting on a person she knows is coming. Most waiting on God feels like this: unclear, unresolved, easy to mistake for nothing happening. But a delay isn't the same thing as an absent God.

DAY 3 — The Grumbling
James moves straight from "be patient" to "do not grumble against one another" (5:9). Waiting that doesn't get dealt with rarely stays contained — it leaks out sideways onto whoever's nearest. If your waiting has made you sharper with the people you love, that's not a separate problem from your patience. It's the same problem, showing up somewhere else.

DAY 4 — The Judge at the Door
Here's what most readers miss: James doesn't just repeat "be patient" — he tells you why patience is even possible. "The Judge is standing at the door" (5:9). And here's the good news hiding in that line: this Judge already bore your judgment when He died on the cross. He's not coming to condemn you. He's coming to finish what He already paid for.

DAY 5 — Waiting for a Person
Martyn Lloyd-Jones wrote, "The Christian is not merely enduring; he is waiting for a Person." That's the whole shift James is after. You were never asked to grit your teeth against silence. You were invited to wait for Someone who already loved you enough to die for you — and who is already on His way.
